T
he Queen of Atlantis surveyed her realm through a high window on the outer fringes of the royal bed chambers. One hand idly toyed with a golden necklace that lay on her collar bone while emerald eyes stared across the complexes and structures of the city's center, through the dome that encapsulated it and into the murky depths beyond. Deep and treacherous thoughts weighted her down. It was obvious in the narrowness of her gaze and the muscles standing tense in her shoulders and back.

"The Rising Darkness." That was the name that it'd been given. Some unknown and malignant plague that was seeping into the cracks of the world. Poisoning, eclipsing, tainting. Mera did not often bend her mind on matters beyond the borders of Atlantis, because there was more than enough within them to occupy her fully. The Darkness had forced her thoughts abroad, however. Arthur was foremost in her pondering. He had enough responsibility and demands governing his kingdom at the best of times. This added threat that was sinking its intangible teeth into the entire earth only complicated things.

Mera brooded, bent under the worry that her husband was pushing himself too hard. Nothing good would befall if his determination brought him to the point of exhaustion. What alternative was there, though? Those trials that riddled Atlantis were ever present, only now inflamed and agitated by the tension that lay over the depths caused by this Rising Darkness. The people were restless and twice as demanding as usual. Mera felt like everything was balanced on a precipice; one strong push and it would collapse, one way or another.

She wouldn't let it.

The Queen turned her back on the scene glimpsed through the window, and with the motion she also pointedly cast off of her conscience the myriad pressures she'd been mentally cataloging. Arthur needed a source of normality in this added chaos. He needed support, mentally and emotionally and a steadfast pillar to shore up his own strength. Mera would be all of those things and more. She passed through the room she'd been musing within, backless emerald dress billowing in her wake. She was intent on finding the King. Mera needed to be with him just then, to rid her heart of the shadows that her pensive spell had coaxed into the open.

Even if she didn't admit that to herself. No, in Mera's mind, she was seeking Arthur out for his benefit.

The Weight of the Seas
Arthur was restless.

He had been in the library within the Royal Palace since the early hours of the morning, speaking with those who studied the information there much more than he, to see if there had been any developments when it came to the rising darkness that was affecting his kingdom. Every day that passed without good news, or any news at all, frustrated the king greatly. His temper was hard to keep in check as it was, but after a morning of being told that there was no news on how to help his people, it was threatening to bubble over and unleash itself on the unfortunate scholars. Arthur knew that they were trying their best to produce results for him, but, still the lack of progress made him greatly concerned.

At least one worry was gone from his mind as of his last meeting with Orm. The relationship he had with his brother Orm had been greatly repaired from their trip out to the wastelands bordering Atlantis. It had given them the opportunity to discuss what was troubling them and to even come to the conclusion that the two of them should venture at some point to the surface world together. Arthur would show to Orm that the humans were not all as venemous and destructive as he believed, but at the same time, he would give to his brother an unedited version of what the world was like above the waves. They had planned to visit Gotham, both to expose Orm to some of the more questionable areas on the surface, but to also catch up with his apprentice whom he had lost thanks to a conflict of love.

Now that he had his brothers increased support, Arthur felt like he could face these duties more than he could have previously. Thanks to that and the constant, reassuring presence of his wife Mera, he had lasted a whole lot longer in this meeting than he generally would have. It was now a couple of hours since he had begun to speak with the various scholars and he had only just called it to it's end. It was time for him to have a break, perhaps spend some time over some breakfast with his wife, before then returning to the various daily duties that he had as king of Atlantis. Deep joy.

Arthur made his way through the corridors of the royal palace at a swift pace, eager to once again be in the presence of his wife. Her strong belief in him, the practical and welcome advice that she gave, and the fact that he knew he need not hold any pretence in her company made Arthur long for the occasions when it was simply he and Mera alone. These were rare, especially now he had so many issues piled onto his shoulders, but he was in need of one of those times this morning. The weight of the troubles of his people were stacked tightly against his back today, he needed a few hours with his wife so he could emerge once more and face them head on.

Spotting Mera heading towards him, Arthur's stormy expression brightened and he smiled softly at his beautiful wife; "Good morning my Queen." he greeted in a warm tone "Fancy meeting you here. Do you have other business this morning or can you spare some time for me?"

M
era made it a distinct point to stay appraised of her husband's schedule. She didn't know where he was at every point of the day, of course, but when the King had predetermined points on his agenda Mera knew of them. This attentiveness is how she was aware that that morning Arthur was holding council with the best scholars that Atlantis possessed. Their hope was that careful study of their kingdom's past could unlock some key or knowledge about the rising darkness. Mera shared in that hope.

She passed through cavernous, idyllic halls. Pillars of fluid and beautiful design, like pearly seashells and vibrant corals that swept upward, where they spread to support the distant ceiling, carved like water lapping the shore. Mera turned corners and used smaller side corridors on her path to the royal library. Those servants or guards that encountered her paused and bowed in respect and Mera gave each one of them the same, reflexive, tight smile that didn't touch the purpose in her eyes.

Halfway to the library itself, the Queen turned a corner to see the object of her quest striding toward her. Mera knew from the storm in his gaze and the subtle pout to his lips, framed by his beard, that the council with the scholars hadn't amounted to anything. How vexing - and Arthur was one to be easily vexed. Yet... Mera watched that storm in the King's appearance lift when his eyes caught her's. Brooding gave way to relief and Mera saw that spark - that bit of flirtatious daring - that was reserved only for her.

Watching Arthur transform on seeing her made Mera shift, too. The firm line of her lips smoothed, her fingers, formerly curled into fists, unfurled and she, too found that the velvet cunning she offered only to Arthur filled her. Mera crossed the distance between them while he spoke, and in way of immediate answer pressed a kiss against his lips. Mera drew away, plucking a single curl of hair that'd fallen onto Arthur's brow and smoothed it back into place. "You are my business just now," she said with a crooked smirk. She met his gaze with her own and quirked one brow. "And I always have time for you."

The Weight of the Seas
It was at times like these were Arthur truly felt he was the luckiest man to grace Atlantis' waters, or the surface world. Seeing the manner in which his wife relaxed at noting his presence made Arthur feel a warmth blossom in his chest. He enjoyed that he had such an effect on her, just as she could provoke the same effect in himself. It was as if they were completely different people under the watchful gaze of others, but their true selves were allowed to be unleashed when they were solely in each others company. Arthur felt as if he was being party to some sought after secret, and undoubtedly privileged that he was one of the only people who got to experience Mera when she was like this.

She approached him and placed a kiss against his lips which worked wonders to dissolve the remaining tension in this frame, he returned the kiss gently before allowing Mera to break away when she wished. The tender gesture of tucking an errant strand of his blonde hair back into place made him chuckle softly, he wanted to catch Mera's hand and keep it in place, but he resisted the temptation for now. While this corridor might be empty at this moment, he had no desire for anyone to catch the two of them in this intimate - although completely innocent - manner. As he had thought previously, their current behaviours were not often in play in public, saved for their private meals and time spent together.

Arthur sighed softly and his smile only grew when Mera declared that he was her business at this moment and that she always had time for him. It calmed his heart and his mind to know that he had this chance to speak with his wife and to discuss what had just happened during his meeting with the scholars. He did not want to trouble Mera more than he needed to, but, this issue was becoming a constant frustration for Arthur. Feeling helpless was not something he enjoyed. Whatever was happening though, was not something he could fix by simply striking something and eliminating the threat. He had no knowledge of magic or why it would be making this drain on their resources happen, neither did the scholars which was downright worrying now. After all this time they had still found nothing, no scrap of information.

"You have no idea how happy I am to hear you say those words." Arthur murmured quietly "Would you join me for some breakfast then? I have just come from a meeting with our scholars and I have much I would like to discuss with you?" he went on to ask, although he already knew the answer would be yes to the offer of sharing some breakfast with each other.

T
hat Arthur could still drive the breathe from her lungs with a look was a testament to the strength of their relationship. To the outer world - to those beyond themselves and Orm - the couple put on the proper image of a royal couple. They were the face of Atlantis and any vulnerability or sensitivity that Mera or Arthur displayed in front of watchful eyes was extended to their realm. Putting on the show of lofty queen wasn't all that difficult for Mera. It was relatively similar to the personality or mood that she usually had toward others.

Only Arthur could strike through that armor to the true Mera that lay beneath. The Queen had been raised in a cutthroat society. Xebel had to fight for every day of life, and Mera had been groomed from infancy as their ultimate weapon. A blade in human form. That Arthur had earned the privilege to see her as she was behind her walls; that she would choose to appear vulnerable to him at all showed her love for him. Mera, too, thanks the seas that she got to see her husband not as the indomitable King of Atlantis, but as the lighthouse keeper's son. As neither King Orin, nor Aquaman: as Arthur Curry. And Arthur Curry is the one that Mera had fallen in love with.

Mera's expression spread in intrigue when Arthur grinned down at her and asked her to breakfast. That in itself wasn't all too peculiar - even if their shared meals didn't happen as frequently as the Queen would like. What piqued her interest more was that he wanted to discuss the content of his meeting that morning during their breakfast. Mera smiled faintly, emerald eyes pensive. "Of course," she said and, slipping her arm into Arthur's own, took her place beside him as they moved through the palace bound for their meal. The results of his council had to have been weighing on Arthur a great deal for him to immediately seek out his wife afterward.

Queen Mera never tired of being confided in by Arthur. Ruling Atlantis wasn't something that she personally desired - it was just part of what marrying Arthur had entailed, and so she happily assumed that responsibility because he was worth it. Even if the ebb and flow of the courts taxed her patience and stamina, Mera much preferred Arthur to include her than avoid doing so for fear of putting too much on her mind, or boring her.

The Weight of the Seas
Arthur smiled lightly when Mera gave her confirmation that she would share some breakfast with him, before she slipped her arm around his own in a gesture of intimacy. It was a simplistic thing, the linking of their arms, but Arthur was calmed by it and his mood kept in it's uplifted state following the appearance of his wife. It had threatened to drop back into a less than pleasant one, as his thoughts lingered on the meeting that he had just left and the problems that it would pose for him and his nation in the future, but those negative lines of thought were put to one side as he simply enjoyed the innocent gesture from his wife.

"Good, thank you." he replied in a warm tone "After spending such a long amount of time in such...intellectual company," Arthur picked his compliment carefully, really meaning to draw attention to the fact the scholars had been quite dull, without saying outright it was so - in case anyone should wander past him "It will be pleasant to have a conversation with my wife."

Walking side by side towards the kitchens, Arthur hoped that there would not be many people milling about in that area today. He wanted to have the room to himself while he spoke with Mera, not to be interrupted every few seconds by an unwitting employee trying to prepare something or other. Normally they would dine in their chambers together, which would provide privacy, but Arthur fancied a change this morning. After being on ceremony during the meeting with the scholars, he wanted to be able to leave the mantle of King to one side for the time being. Being served food in his chambers by his various employees did not accomplish that. Informally eating in the kitchen with his wife, like any normal civilian, that certainly would.

Arthur...did not like being the King of Atlantis, this much was well known to Mera. He wanted to be free to go between the surface world and his home here without repercussions. Each time he left his nation however, his reputation soured and his people's view of him worsened. He didn't think it helped that his brother was such a model of standard Atlantian royalty either. Orm had been brought up immersed in their ways whereas Arthur had a slap dash introduction at best before being thrown into rule.

This wasn't him, but, he had to play the hand he had been dealt.

M
era smirked somewhat at Arthur's words after his relief that she'd agreed to join him for breakfast. She didn't fail to note the hidden barb in that carefully crafted sentence. Mera had interacted with the royal scholars more often recently than she had until that point. Pressures of queenhood and missteps on her part due to not knowing Atlantian culture and customs as much as she might had spurred Mera to begin long and arduous lessons beneath Vulko's stewardship. There were several times when the lofty, raised chins of the scholars or their riddled speech nearly earned them a strangling by the Queen's hand.

"Truly, we're lucky to have such studious scholars advising the King," Mera said. She was much less talented at disguising the sarcasm and dripping disdain in her words. For her merit, it was borne out of indifference more than inability. The overly-Shakespearean phrasing that Mera used alone highlighted out absurd the claim was. Her dry, half-lidded eyes roved to Arthur when he said it would be nice to talk with his wife. "I must warn you: I'm afraid I'm far less verbose. I may pale in comparison." She smirked more openly this time, green eyes dancing cunningly.

Together the King and Queen of Atlantis passed through the grand halls of the palace and eventually found themselves within the royal kitchens. The chefs and cooks therein gave dips of their heads in reverence to Arthur and Mera, but they didn't fall over themselves in bowing like most servants might. They were busy, pressed and focused on their tasks at all times. Feeding the castle was a very persistent job and unless they were on break or off duty, they didn't cease their working. Mera was grateful for that.

Since taking over managing the castle staff, Mera had managed to weed out unnecessary, lavish protocol where she could. Still, other Atlantian nobles liked things the way they'd been before Mera became Queen. Most of her servants were only the appropriate (by her standards) measure of respectful when no other judging eyes were around. Much of the time they were forced to bow and faun and serve more than Mera preferred.

Some of the attendants in the kitchens adjusted their responsibilities when the royal couple appeared. In the time that it took Arthur and Mera to wind their way along the outer edge of the chamber, they entered into a side room where a table was already laid for them to eat. Cabinets and cupboards lined the wall that held the door into the greater kitchens and small side-entrances to servant quarters were to their left and right, but the outer wall boasted wide, oval windows surrounded in underwater plants in a lattice. Through them they could see into one of the castle's gardens. The environment was private, but not stale, thanks to the sound of the kitchen staff near at hand.

"I like this room better than the dining hall, or our private chambers," Mera remarked. She let her arm slide out of Arthur's and closed the door to it behind them. There were panels of glass set into the door, but they were frosted and only shadows moved in them. The Queen stretched and, reaching up she unpinned her hair where it'd been artfully tacked up at the back of her head, allowing auburn locks to fall loose and free around her shoulders.

The Weight of the Seas
Arthur had to bite down on his lower lip to mask the sound of laughter that had threatened to break free at Mera's retort to his comment. She always knew just what to say to alleviate his stresses and those were certainly some of those comments which lifted his spirits. While he was more than aware that the scholars were suited to their work, in personality and intellect, they were not the kind of people he wished to speak to for hours on end. He would have preferred greatly to be off in the wilds fighting some beast and lose a limb than have to spend all day in their truly tedious company. It seemed as if his wife was in much the same mindset as he was.

The idea that he would find speaking to his wife pale in comparison to dealing with the scholars did make Arthur chuckle, despite the public venue their conversation was taking place in. If he would rather have an arm gnawed off by a shark than spend all day in the scholars company, he would be very concerned if his wife's conversations skills were considered even worse than that. Obviously it was a jest as there was nobody he enjoyed speaking with more than Mera, but it was one that he was happy to continue to indulge as they made their way towards the kitchens.

"Oh yes, truly lucky." he agreed with a firm nod of his head, his lips pulled into as serious a line as he could manage with the urge to laugh again rising within him "While I am sure I can make do with your conversation skills, wife of mine, perhaps some extra sessions with our wonderful scholars are in order to improve them." Arthur suggested, his faux-serious expression cracking under the humorous question he had posed.

He was thankful when they both reached the quiet room off the kitchens, where they would take meals when they felt the need to be away from the grandeur of their other accommodations. Arthur felt more relaxed in this kind of atmosphere, less like the King that he was and that he had no need to pretend about how he felt. The staff in the kitchen were discreet, he knew this, so he had no qualms about being true to his own thoughts and feelings in this space, it felt good to be able to shed that weight from his shoulders, if even only for a short while.

"Me too," he responded, a nod of his head as he threaded his fingers through his dirty blonde hair, a gesture of frustration based off his meeting earlier "Sometimes it is good to get away from the, er, ornate surroundings for an hour or so. I don't have to concern myself with breaking some priceless or historical work of art by accident." Arthur added, a little smirk pulling at his lips "So, shall I wait for our food to be brought or would you like me to dive right in?" he asked, holding back on revealing the results of the scholars meeting until he had his answer.
